US-listed ETFs gather $300bn net inflows YTD

ETFs and ETPs listed in the US have gathered $300 billion of net inflows in the first eight months of 2017 after attracting $24.2bn net new assets during August, according to ETF industry consultant ETFGI. The net inflows in August marked the 19th consecutive month of positive net gatherings for the region.

In May, we wrote that despite the generally low market volatility that has prevailed this year, investors were paying relatively high prices for downside protection as measured by “options skew” – the difference in implied volatility between an out-of-the-money option and an at-the-money option. Low market volatility largely continued through the summer, but how has options skew behaved – has it fallen to more “normal” levels?

Solactive launches US investment grade corporate bond index

Solactive has launched the Solactive US Large Cap Equal Weight Index, a new index that tracks an equal weight exposure to the US large-cap equity segment. The index will include the 500 largest US-domiciled equities and will underlie the forthcoming Goldman Sachs Equal Weight US Large Cap Equity ETF (Bats: GSEW). Nasdaq and Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote mutual development and foster cooperation between the two companies. The memorandum paves the way for both sides to work closely together in expanding their ETF markets and facilitating the cross-listing of ETFs on both the Nasdaq and TWSE.



Franklin Templeton makes ETF debut in Europe

Franklin Templeton has made its exchange-traded funds debut in Europe with the launch of four smart beta ETFs on the London Stock Exchange and Deutsche Börse’s Xetra. Branded as Franklin LibertyShares and linked to custom proprietary indices, the launch includes a pair of multi-factor ETFs, one of which is SRI focused, and a pair of quality dividend ETFs. Patrick O’Connor, head of global ETFs at Franklin Templeton, said: “Our first European offerings aim to help investors achieve specific investment outcomes such as strong risk-adjusted returns, lower volatility and downside protection.”
