Smart beta equity ETFs record 5-year annual growth of 31%

London-based ETF research and consultancy firm, ETFGI, has reported that smart beta equity ETFs/ETPs assets have experienced a 5-year compound annual growth rate of 30.6%, according to data up to the end of January 2017. The data also reveals that assets invested in smart beta equity ETFs/ETPs listed globally reached a new record high of $534 billion at the end of January 2017.

Record levels of assets were reached at the end of January for globally listed smart beta equity ETFs/ETPs in the United States ($477bn), in Europe ($37bn), in Canada ($13bn) and in Asia Pacific ex-Japan ($4.7bn). Global net inflows to smart beta equity ETFs/ETPs in January were $10.7bn.

Funds domiciled and listed in the United States have 89% of global smart beta ETF/ETP assets, while funds with exposure to the US equity market make up the largest share of global smart beta assets with 78%.

iShares gathered the largest smart beta ETF/ETP net inflows in January with $3.8bn, followed by PowerShares with $1.3bn and Vanguard with $1.3bn. Products tracking S&P Dow Jones smart beta indices gathered the largest net ETF/ETP inflows during the month with $5.2bn in net new assets, followed by MSCI with $1.1bn and CRSP with $1.1bn.

At the end of January 2017, there were 1,208 smart beta equity ETFs/ETPs, with 2,034 listings from 150 providers listed on 37 exchanges in 32 countries.
