Europe-domiciled ETF issuers have seen assets in their products grow at unprecedented rates in 2017 so far.

Assets invested in Europe-listed ETFs have grown by 31% in the first nine months of the year to reach a new record of $751 billion.

Year-to-date (YTD) net inflows now stand at $86bn, almost double the inflows at this point last year and already comfortably above the $56bn of inflows recorded during the entire of 2016.

Breaking down the flows by asset class reveals that equities were the main recipient of new assets during the month, gaining a record $6.8bn. YTD inflows for equity ETFs now stand at $52bn, significantly greater than the $1.8bn of net new assets recorded over the same period last year and several multiples higher than the $18bn of inflows seen in the whole of 2016.

Fixed income ETFs have fared less well recently, gathering $690 million in net new assets during the month. YTD inflows now stand at $23bn, slightly less than the $27bn seen over the same period last year.

Commodity ETFs experienced net outflows during the month, losing $22m. YTD, net inflows have reached $7.6m compared to inflows of $12m over the same period in 2016.

Looking at the issuers, it will come as little surprise to ETF industry watchers to hear that BlackRock gathered the largest amount of net inflows during the month. The issuer of the iShares range gathered $5.1bn in September, followed by Amundi with $1.3bn and Lyxor with $1.2bn.

BlackRock has also gathered the largest amount of net new assets YTD, adding $32bn, followed by Lyxor ($10bn) and UBS ($10bn) some distance behind.

At the end of September 2017, the number of ETFs listed in Europe stood at 2,285, from 60 providers on 27 exchanges in 21 countries.
