ETFs in Europe hit €620bn in AUM, reports Thomson Reuters

Assets under management (AUM) of ETFs domiciled in Europe reached €622 billion at the end of October, up from €601bn the previous month, according to Thomson Reuters. October saw the addition of €6.6bn in net new assets, meaning the majority of the €20.9bn AUM gain was due to the performance of underlying markets.

In a move reflecting trends seen in the wider asset management industry – namely the shift from active to passive – the Innovator IBD 50 Fund (FFTY US) has switched from being actively managed to passive index-tracking. The ETF, which launched in April 2015, will now track the IBD 50 Index, which had previously been used as the ETF’s performance benchmark.

Boston-based ETF issuer O’Shares Investments has announced the closing of two ETFs which provide currency-hedged exposure to high quality dividend-paying equities listed in Europe and Asia Pacific. Connor O’Brien, CEO of O’Shares, commented: “The decision has been made to close the funds so we can direct resources to developing new O’Shares ETFs to meet investors’ demand for different strategies.”

Sector ETFs set to be impacted by changes to GICS

MSCI and S&P Dow Jones Indices have announced changes to the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) that will see the telecommunication services sector being broadened and renamed as communication services. Global ETF inflows hit €500bn for 2017, reports Amundi

Exchange-traded funds recorded €52.6 billion of inflows during October, taking the global total for 2017 to €500bn, according to research by Amundi. In Europe, inflows totalled €6.8bn for October (€80.6bn since January), with €5.8bn flowing into equity products and €1bn into fixed income products.

Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM) has agreed to buy ETF Securities’ European ETF platform known as Canvas. The news comes two days after WisdomTree announced a deal to buy ETF Securities’ European ETP business. Graham Tuckwell, founder and chairman of ETF Securities, commented, “Combining the ETF expertise and capabilities of Canvas with the scale and reach of LGIM should be transformative for existing and new customers.”
