Franklin Templeton expands passive ETF suite

Franklin Templeton Investments has added four new ETFs to its line-up of passively managed country and regional funds, introducing exposures to equities listed in India, Russia, Asia Pacific ex-Japan, and Switzerland. Patrick O’Connor, head of global ETFs at Franklin Templeton Investments, said, “Our suite of passive country- and region-specific ETFs has been well received in the marketplace, as clients look for low-cost vehicles that can be used to access different exposures for their portfolios or solutions capabilities.”



Harvest Portfolios launches Canada’s first blockchain ETF

Harvest Portfolios Group has launched the Blockchain Technologies ETF (HBLK CN), the first of its kind to list on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The fund targets exposure to equity securities of North American companies that are poised to potentially benefit from the development and implementation of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies. Michael Kovacs, CEO of Harvest Portfolios Group, commented, “Canada’s first blockchain ETF is designed to provide investors with access to this rapidly developing market segment.”

Redwood launches world’s first active marijuana ETF

Redwood Asset Management has launched the Marijuana Opportunities Fund (MJJ CN) on Canada’s NEO Exchange. The fund is a world first as it is currently the only actively managed ETF to focus exclusively on equities tied to the marijuana or marijuana-related industries. Peter Shippen, president and chief executive officer of Redwood Asset Management, said “the significant volatility of the sector and the ongoing evolution of the regulatory environment in the cannabis space have made active management the preferable way to invest.”

Amundi has cross-listed four equity ETFs onto SIX Swiss Exchange in Zurich, expanding its offering for Switzerland-based investors looking for locally listed access. Three of the ETFs track MSCI indices, while the fourth tracks an index from S&P Dow Jones Indices. They include Europe ex-Switzerland, world energy, world financials and global luxury exposures, all based on developed-market stocks.

The Innovation Shares NextGen Protocol ETF (KOIN US) provides investors with a thematic play on developments in blockchain technology. “Blockchain is a highly innovative technology, and we’re applying an innovative approach to identifying the stocks leveraged to the theme,” said Matt Markiewicz, managing director with Innovation Shares.

The ETFs – which offer a varied assortment of exposures – provide a locally listed access point for domestic Italian investors. They include sector-specific exposures to energy, financials and luxury goods; Italian large-caps; and a play on US share buybacks.
