Tradeweb reports record ETF activity during July

Over-the-counter (OTC) exchange provider Tradeweb has announced that trading activity on its European-listed ETF marketplace reached a record high of €12.6bn during July. The performance, up 9% from the previous high set in April, was reached during the seventh consecutive month of trading activity surpassing €10bn.

Tradeweb reported a clear buying trend across all ETF asset classes during July. However, equity-based ETFs were the most traded during the month, comprising 56% or €7.1bn of trading volume. ‘Buys’ in equity-based ETFs outstripped ‘sells’ by six percentage points; however, overall activity in equity ETFs lagged the previous 12-month rolling average by eight percentage points.

Within fixed income ETFs, the proportion of volume executed increased to 37% or €4.7bn of total trading volume, beating the previous 12-month rolling average by five percentage points. Commenting on the strong trading activity in the asset class, Adriano Pace, Managing Director for Equity Derivatives at Tradeweb, said: “Fixed income ETFs were particularly active in July. The asset class saw steady buying throughout the month in instruments covering emerging markets, corporates, high yield and government debt.”

Commodity funds saw 7% or €880m of total trading volume during July. The figure represented an increase over the 12-month rolling average of three percentage points.

July’s list of the ten most heavily-traded ETFs was dominated by fixed income instruments, of which four offer exposure to government debt including the top-ranked fund. In second place, the Vanguard S&P 500 UCITS ETF (LSE: VUSD) featured in the top ten for the fifth time this year.
