Fifteen years ago this week the first bond ETFs debuted, changing the way investors can access fixed income markets. At first, only four iShares bond ETFs were available, with just a small amount of assets and access limited to Treasuries and US investment grade credit. Today there are over 300 bond ETFs in the US with more than $500 billion in AUM, offering entry into almost every sector of the bond market. What brought about this exceptional growth?

Ossiam Shiller Barclays CAPE US Sector Value ETF reaches $1bn in AUM

Ossiam has reported that the Ossiam Shiller Barclays CAPE US Sector Value UCITS ETF (LON: UCAP) passed the $1 billion AUM milestone in June. The ETF uses the cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings (CAPE) ratio, developed jointly by Barclays and Nobel Prize-winning economist Professor Robert Shiller, as a valuation driver in a sector rotational strategy. Professor Shiller said: “I feel grateful to the people at Ossiam and at Barclays for the careful work they have done to make the CAPE products a reality for so many people.”

Lyxor has launched three new fixed income ETFs on Borsa Italiana, the Lyxor BofAML EUR Short Term High Yield UCITS ETF (HYS), Lyxor BofAML $ Short Term High Yield Euro Hedged UCITS ETF (HYSTH) and the Lyxor $ Float Rate Note EUR Hedged UCITS ETF (FLOTH).

BlackRock slashes fees on iShares MBS ETF

BlackRock has reduced the fees charged on the iShares MBS ETF (NYSE Arca: MBB) from 0.27% to just 0.09%. MBB tracks the Bloomberg Barclays US Mortgage Backed Securities Index, composed of a broad range of investment-grade mortgage-backed pass-through securities issued and/or guaranteed by US government agencies such as Ginnie Mae, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac.

Barclays and Time to launch suite of Fortune 500 indices

Barclays and Time Inc have announced they have entered into an exclusive agreement to launch a new family of indices based on the Fortune 500, the annual list of the largest public and private corporations in the US ranked by revenue. The indices, which will focus on listed stocks, will be designed to be investable and thus suitable to underlie index-linked investment products such as ETFs.

Barclays has launched the Barclays Merger Arbitrage US Index, a new addition to the Barclays range of Quantitative Investment Strategies. The index, which is suitable to underlie future investment products such as ETFs, will allow investors to access potential returns from the successful completion of announced merger deals in the US.
