Global ETF assets surpass $1.5 trillion

At the end of the second quarter (Q2) 2012, the global ETF industry had 3,309 ETFs, with 7,353 listings, assets of $1,503bn, from 171 providers on 50 exchanges, according to analysis from ETFGI, a London-based independent ETF research and consultancy firm.

Globally, there are 3,309 ETFs, with 7,353 listings, assets of $1,503bn, from 171 providers on 50 exchanges.

The data, compiled by industry expert Deborah Fuhr and her team at ETFGI, show that ETF assets have increased by 4.0% from $1,445bn in May 2012 to $1,503bn in June 2012; year-to-date (YTD) through end of Q2 2012, ETF assets have increased by 11.1% from $1,353bn to $1,503bn.

In terms of flows, in June 2012 ETFs saw net inflows of $18,571m, while YTD through end of Q2 2012, ETFs saw net inflows of $99,800m. iShares gathered the largest net ETF inflows in June with $6,504m, followed by SPDR ETFs with $4,204m and PowerShares with $1,730m net inflows. Vanguard gathered the largest net ETF inflows YTD with $29,925m, followed by iShares with $24,929m and SPDR ETFs with $10,107m net inflows.

Van Eck experienced the largest net outflows in June with $369m, while DB X-trackers experienced the largest net outflows YTD with $1,428m, followed by Commerzbank with $875m and Lyxor with $857m net outflows.

Including other Exchange Traded Products (ETPs), the global ETF/ETP industry had 4,684 ETFs/ETPs, with 9,443 listings, assets of $1,682bn, from 202 providers on 54 exchanges. ETF/ETP assets have increased by 3.9% from $1,619bn in May 2012 to $1,682bn in June 2012. YTD through end of Q2 2012, ETF/ETP assets have increased by 10.2% from $1,526bn to
$1,682bn.

In June 2012, ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of $21,483m. YTD through end of Q2 2012, ETFs/ETPs saw net inflows of $106,940m. iShares gathered the largest net inflows in June with $6,788m, followed by SPDR ETFs with $4,706m and PowerShares with $1,730m net inflows. Vanguard gathered the largest net inflows YTD with $29,925m, followed by iShares with $25,467m and SPDR ETFs with $11,672m net inflows.

Van Eck experienced the largest net outflows in June with $369m. DB X-trackers experienced the largest net outflows YTD with $1,621m, followed by Commerzbank with $875m and Lyxor with $857m net outflows.
